Why FBD capacity measured in Kg and RMG capacity measured in liter?. The answer of this question is based on the difference in design and functionality of both equipment’s i.e. FBD (Fluidized Bed Dryer) and RMG (Rapid Mixer Dryer).

Why RMG capacity measured in liter ?

The main functionality and working principle of RMG (Rapid Mixer Dryer) is “Loading of raw materials, dry mixing, binding and granulating of raw materials”. The capacity RMG is for example is 1400 L. It means that the raw materials with the bulk density 1 gm/ml, 1400 kg can be loaded in RMG. However, the different raw materials or product have different bulk density and may not be same for all products. Now for example ‘Product A’ have bulk density 0.5 gm/ml, It means only 700 kg of ‘Product A’ can be process in RMG with 1400 L capacity. for example ‘Product B’ have bulk density 0.75 gm/ml, It means only 1050 kg of ‘Product B’ can be process in RMG with 1400 L capacity.

As explained above, the different raw material or product have different bulk density and based on bulk density the total occupancy of product in RMG (Rapid Mixer Dryer) can be decide or calculate. Hence the capacity of RMG (Rapid Mixer Dryer) is measured in liters.

Calculate RMG capacity or occupancy

You can calculate RMG capacity or occupancy for specific product as below:

% Occupancy of RMG = Capacity RMG in liters X bulk density (gm/ml) X 100 / Capacity RMG in liters

= 1400 X 0.5 X 100 / 1400

= 50 % Occupancy

You can use 20 % to 80 % of Occupancy of RMG.

Why FBD capacity measured in Kg ?

In case of FBD, its functionality and working principle is not only holding of wet granules or product, but also fluidization (lifting up) of wet granules or product. The inlet air flow (CFM) of FBD and exhaust ducts are designed based on capacity of material can be fluidized. Hence, FBD capacity should be mentioned in kg only.
